Third Reich Tour

The Nazis were in power for just twelve years. That was long enough to cost millions of lives and redraw the map of Europe for good.

This private Third Reich tour in Berlin follows that history through the stories of my grandfather Herbert Behnke - from unemployed, apolitical youth to a soldier in the German Wehrmacht — as our thread through the rise and fall of the regime. We start at the Reichstag, where the collapse of the Weimar Republic gave Hitler his opening, and end at the ruins of the Führerbunker, where the war and the regime both ran out of road.

Along the way, we'll cover Albert Speer's plans to rebuild Berlin as "Germania," and walk Wilhelmstraße, the old seat of Nazi government, where Goebbels' Propaganda Ministry and Göring's Air Ministry still stand almost untouched. At the Topography of Terror, we'll look at how Germany's relationship with this history has shifted over the decades, and stop at the memorials to the Jews, Sinti and Roma, gay men, and others murdered under Nazi rule.

The extended version of this tour goes further still — the 1936 Olympic Stadium, a closer look at how Nazi propaganda actually worked, and the Bendlerblock, where Claus von Stauffenberg planned the failed 1944 attempt to kill Hitler and end the regime from within.

What a fantastic tour with Dennis! He is incredibly knowledgeable with such interesting stories that kept our family captivated for 4 hours. My husband has studied WWII intensely and he was so impressed with Dennis' facts and stories and said every single one of them was fact based and accurate + he learned some new things along the way. Dennis was very kind, customized the tour to what we wanted to see and was a pleasure to spend the day with. Highly recommend!
